Most modern quarters are worth exactly 25 cents—but a small letter on certain 2019 quarters can make a big difference.
Today’s Check Your Change find is the 2019-W America the Beautiful quarter, one of the most exciting modern coins intentionally released into everyday circulation.
What should you look for?
First, check the date. You are looking for a quarter dated 2019.
Next, turn to the front—the side featuring George Washington—and look for a small “W” mintmark near Washington’s ponytail. The “W” means the coin was produced at the West Point Mint in New York.
Five different 2019 quarter designs were issued with the W mintmark:
- Lowell National Historical Park
- American Memorial Park
- War in the Pacific National Historical Park
- San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
- Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness
All five qualify. The important detail is that small W on the front.
Why are these quarters special?
In 2019, the United States Mint produced 10 million West Point quarters—two million of each of the five designs—and mixed them into bags of ordinary Philadelphia and Denver quarters.
They were not originally sold directly to collectors. Instead, the Mint deliberately placed them into circulation to encourage Americans to search their change and become interested in coin collecting. It was the first time quarters bearing the W mintmark were released for general circulation.
Two million coins may sound like a lot, but it is a very small number compared with the hundreds of millions of ordinary quarters frequently produced for each design. Many 2019-W quarters have already been removed from circulation, but worn examples can still turn up in change, bank rolls, vending machines and coin jars.
How much is a 2019-W quarter worth?
As of September 2026, an ordinary example is generally valued at approximately $12 to $30, depending on the particular design and its condition. A worn or damaged coin may bring less, while attractive uncirculated examples and professionally certified high-grade coins can be worth more.
Do not assume that every W quarter is worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. Exceptional auction results generally involve coins in unusually high certified grades—not typical examples found in circulation. Authentication, surface quality and overall condition determine the actual value.
What should you do if you find one?
Do not clean, polish or rub the coin. Even gentle cleaning can leave scratches and reduce its collector value.
Hold it by the edges, photograph both sides and place it in a non-PVC coin flip or protective capsule. Avoid letting it move around with other loose coins.
