Ever notice a small star at the end of a U.S. bill’s serial number? It identifies a replacement note, commonly called a “star note.”

When the Bureau of Engraving and Printing discovers an imperfect sheet after serial numbers have been added, it replaces that sheet with specially numbered star notes instead of recreating every original serial number. The star is intentional—not a printing error.

Some star notes are collectible because their print runs were relatively small, although the star alone does not guarantee high value.
