The back of the modern $2 bill features an engraving based on John Trumbull’s famous painting Declaration of Independence—but it isn’t an exact copy.

Trumbull’s Capitol painting contains 47 figures. Because the entire scene would not fit on a banknote, Bureau of Engraving and Printing artists omitted five men when adapting it for the Series 1976 $2 note.

The design was introduced for America’s Bicentennial and remains on $2 bills today, making an ordinary-looking note a miniature—and slightly edited—work of American art.
